SDG conference in ROME
At a time when intersecting global crises are posing unprecedented challenges to advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Development Law Organization and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy organised the fourth SDG 16 Conference from 30 May to 1 June 2023 in Rome, Italy.
Building on the outcomes of the 2019, 2021 and 2022 editions, the Conference reviewed progress and challenges related to SDG 16, focusing on conflict and shrinking trust in public institutions. The event also explored SDG 16’s catalytic role in responding to food systems and climate change crises. It will contribute to the 2023 SDG Summit and High-Level Political Forum as well as other intergovernmental processes. |

Day -2
The deputy PM of Italy and FAO DG and other speakers in their opening remarks talked about the Conflict situations in Russia-Ukraine, and making Africa as their battle ground,g lobal food insecurity, adverse climatic conditions ( long drought followed by floods in the Central Italy )with a solution in space technology, early warning systems for climate change , harmonizing and integrating the policies - local to global ( policy coherence) , reviving dialogue with the communities with emphasis on #production #protection and #buildingresilience apart from developing the local capacities because the humanitarian crisis due to climate crisis is inevitable. There were discussions around good case studies and recommendations to accelerate the climate actions however these policies would remain on papers in absence of people’s participation and a robust follow up and review mechanisms while addressing systemic barrier otherwise the communities would bear the brunt of bureaucracy |

Data gaps exist but the regional and national importance to identify better data source for SDG 16
Enhanced coordination to create data ecosystem towards informal decision making , international community to improved information - improved knowledge and decision making
Restoring trust in public institution towards renewed social contracts - several enablers of trust - women equality an integrated part of good governance and repeal gender discrimination laws , economic empowerment and social protection to stop violence against women
Building the capacity of public servants , empowering citizens , skilled people
Efforts though not sufficient to enhance transparency and accountability of the govt
Fiscal transparency- the capacity of the govt to access finance and response to people need
Mobile’s political will and ownership
