Global Advocacy Leadership Academy in Asia (10-17 August, Chulalongkorn University)
The 4th Global Advocacy Leadership Academy in Asia(GALAA IV) was held from 10 August until 17 August with 30+ particularly active participants CSOs in Asia. This year's theme was "Mainstreaming human rights and democracy in implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Asia". Participants were able to get familiarized with SDGs agenda and develop civil society strategies together through sessions on Human Rights and Democracy, Inequality and Gender Equality, Mapping of SDGs implementation at national level, Inter-ministerial Negotiation Exercise on SDGs Budget, Toolkit Training for SDG16, Workshop on Skill Learning: Communication strategies session, Follow-up Action Plans. ADA Members Meeting (9:00-12:30, 14 August, Holiday Inn Silom)
ADA Members Meeting was held to approve new members and make decisions on IFP projects, Nomination for A4SD Facilitation Group. Malaysian CSO SDGs Network and Japan NPO Center newly joined ADA and the IFP project will be conducted at the national and regional level with VANI's cooperation for financial management. Regional Consultation on Asia Partnership for Sustainable Development (14 August, Holiday Inn Silom)
ADA and GCAP jointly held this regional consultation to discuss building a loose Asian Civil Society Platform to engage the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Various constituencies working in the Asia region on the SDGs came together to share their vision and activities and decided to work together in the partnership. Asia Civil Society Forum on SDG16 (15-16 August, Holiday Inn Silom and UN Convention Center)
The first Asia Civil Society Forum on SDG16 was held on 15-16 August. The forum covered various aspects of accountability, peace&security, human rights, governance, transparency, data and more of SDG16 through 12 sessions with 100+ participants. It was held in Holiday Inn Silom on the first day to share CSOs views and engagement at UN High-level Political Forum(HLPF), UN Human Rights Council, Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development(UNESCAP APFSD) with thematic workshops. On its second day, the forum took place at UN Convention Center to have dialogues with UN Development Group(UNDG), UN Development Program(UNDP), UN Project Office on Governance, Open Government Partnership(OGP), Asia Development Bank(ADB) along with thematic workshops hosted by TAP Network, ODI, faith-based/religious groups. Welcoming New Members!
We are happy to introduce new ADA members from Malaysia and Japan!
Founded in 1996, Japan NPO Center (JNPOC) acts as a national infrastructure organization for the growing nonprofit sector in Japan. With a variety of programs, JNPOC aims to support the civic activities of Japanese civil society and the growth of its nonprofit sector through the development of NPOs (nonprofit organizations) and NPO intermediaries, and the promotion of collaboration between nonprofits, the government and the private sector. JNPOC came to join ADA after recognizing the need to work with development NGOs because of the universality of the SDGs. http://www.jnpoc.ne.jp/en/
Malaysian CSO SDGs Network is a newly founded civil society network in Malaysia. The network aims to ensure CSO involvement in national SDG implementation, Monitor the implementation of SDGs at the National level and network with UN agencies at the national, regional and international levels with reference to SDG implementation. The network has been undertaking a mapping exercise of all CSO involvement and implementation of SDGs in Malaysia and organize dialogue sessions and participate public sector discussion/programs on SDGs and participated at regional meetings such as UNESCAP Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development, ASEAN events and High Level Political Forum(HLPF).
