ADA NewsletterJune 2020

Dear ADA Members and Friends,

With High Level political Forum just round the corner, we all have intensified our advocacies around the various themes that we are working around and also making sure to mend the digital divide created widely during the virtual events, where the CSO voices are easily supressed. This itself shows the nature of involvement of the Civil society Actors against the will and norms of Agenda 2030 . Nevertheless, we keep continuing our struggles to fight in solidarity and making our voices heard , if not in these huge virtual showcases, then through using wide social media and openly sharing our concerns, reminding ourselves constantly – ‘Never Stop Doing What We have been Destined to -  Do- Raise Our Voices against any suppression’!!

Please feel free to share your concerns and opinion and how can we help you, by writing to ADA secretariat and share updates should you wish them published in our monthly newsletter apart from giving your suggestions on how to improve our communication with you at  ada2030.secretariat@gmail.com

In solidarity,

Jyotsna Mohan

HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM 2020 UNDER THE AUSPICES OF ECOSOC

The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2020 will be held from Tuesday, 7 July, to Thursday, 16 July 2020, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. This will include the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Tuesday, 14 July, to Thursday, 16 July 2020. .
The theme will be "Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development ".
The HLPF annual meeting is the core United Nations platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
In the 2020 HLPF, participants will debate where we stand on the SDGs in light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. They will reflect on how the international community can respond to the pandemic in a way that puts us back on track to achieve the SDGs and accelerate progress during the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.
47 countries will carry out voluntary national reviews (VNRs) of their implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the 2020 HLPF from Friday, 10 July to Thursday, 16 July 2020. For more details, please click here.
The HLPF will adopt a Ministerial Declaration as the outcome of its session. The President of ECOSOC will also prepare a summary to capture the key messages of the discussions. For more details, please click here.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and expected limitations on in-person meetings and international travel, the ECOSOC Bureau has made adjustments to the format and programme of HLPF 2020 (Information note on the arrangements for the 2020 HLPF and HLS). Available technological solutions for virtual sessions and interaction will be used – including for presentations of Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). All meetings will be held virtually, including all side and special events.
HLPF Format
The [2020 HLPF Programme] has been released and is available for you download from the 'Latest' column of the HLPF 2020 website. The 2020 HLPF will most likely be virtual.
Funding
Due to the likely virtual format of the 2020 HLPF, there will not be funding allocated to support travel of MGoS representatives at the 2020 HLPF.
Registration
Registered participants will be able to attend the virtual meetings. Others will be able to follow the meeting through UN Web TV or YouTube. Further details on the process will be shared soon.
New Stakeholders Webpage
UN DESA has created a 'Stakeholders' page which is accessible from the HLPF 2020 navigation bar. It contains information on engagement and participation at the 2020 HLPF.
Ministerial Declaration [update]
All documentation can be found in the Library section of the Stakeholders, 2020 HLPF website. Three meetings of informal consultations will take place on:
Monday, 8 June 2020 @ 3pm EDT (New York time)
Tuesday, 16 June 2020
Tuesday, 23 June 2020
Participation
1 representative from each of the MGoS will be invited to the meeting to represent each Group. Each MGoS Group will nominate their representative. Please note that the informal consultations will not be broadcast on UN Web TV. Notetakers should be advised that the consultations will take place under Chatham House Rule.
Oral Statements
3 representatives will be invited to make statements on behalf of the MGoS. The nomination process will be conducted by the MGoS CM Advocacy Task Group.
Written Statements
Each MGoS Group may submit a written statement of key messages (1 page). These should be sent to desa-oisc2@un.org on Monday, 8 June 2020 by 1pm EDT (New York time). Please await further instructions from your MGoS Group.
Lead Discussants - Official Thematic Sessions
UN DESA will be requesting 11 Lead Discussants from the Major Groups and other Stakeholders to participate in the official thematic sessions of the 2020 HLPF.
Each of the MGoS will conduct its own process to nominate Lead Discussants. These nominations will then be reviewed by the Steering Group of the MGoS Coordination Mechanism. A slate of nominations will be submitted by the Steering Group to ECOSOC for review. Please do not contact UN DESA directly to submit a nomination, await instruction from your Major Group and/or Stakeholder Group about its own nomination process.
The deadline to submit the slate of nominations to ECOSOC will be on Monday, 22 June at 12pm EDT (New York time). Please note that the deadlines for the MGoS' own nomination processes will conclude much earlier than the date above and may differ between each Group.
Stakeholder Perspective - Official Thematic Session
The MGoS Official Session is listed in the 2020 HLPF Programme on Tuesday, 7 July 2020 from 5 - 6pm EDT (New York time). The title of the session is: Transformative pathways to realize the 2030 Agenda: a whole of society approach taking into account the impact of COVID19 (Stakeholder perspective). UN DESA will be working with the MGoS Coordination Mechanism Steering Group to organise the session. You will be able to view the session on UN Web TV or YouTube.

This side event covers the first transformative entry area of the 2030 Agenda- :‘human wellbeing and capabilities”. Participants will exchange experiences, success stories, obstacles and opportunities to address gaps in the production and usage of data to monitor SDG16+.

They will also explore opportunities for collaboration, in particular around citizen- led and generated data which should be recognized by governments Participants will be introduced to online tools to facilitate data collection on groups traditionally left behind (specifically on indigenous peoples) and improve the monitoring of SDG 16+ targets with big data gaps, such as SDG 4.7 (Human Rights Education)
