The 5th Glocal Advocacy Leadership in Asia (GALA) Academy – East Asia is a joint initiative by Asia Development Alliance (ADA) and Asia Democracy Network (ADN) with the aim of strengthening advocacy capacity of CSOs for defending and promoting civic and democratic space and human rights through strategic “glocal (global and local)” actions on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is to be organized in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 18 to 23 Oct. 2017 in partnership with the International Forum of National NGO/CSO Platforms (IFP), Transparency, Accountability and Participation (TAP) Network and Asia Partnership for Sustainable Development (APSD) with the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia (CCC) as a local host.
The workshop is expected to help CSOs in East Asia to learn about SDGs itself as well as how to engage with the government and others stakeholders for the implementation of SDGs including monitoring and coalition-building among CSOs across the sectors.
The workshop is also to focus on how to engage in the Voluntary National Review (VNR) of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) and SDG 10 (inequality) and 16 (peace and justice) which are global thematic priorities of HLPF 2019 and SDG Target 17.2 (ODA) and 17.17 (partnership)
The GALAA East Asia 2017 is the first sub-regional training workshop in East Asia after the 4 regional GALAA from 2013 to 2016 as a joint training of ADA, ADN and FORUM-ASIA. Two national training workshops on SDGs have been organized in Bhutan and Myanmar in July and the third one to be in Mongolia in Aug. 2017.OBJECTIVES
The general objective of the GALAA East Asia 2017 is to enhance capacity and shared an understanding of the next generation of CSO leaders in Asia, who shall play a crucial and constructive role in the national, regional and international advocacy on human rights, development, and democracy.
In particular, at the end of the weeklong training, participants are expected to have attained the following specific learning objectives: 1) necessary knowledge about SDGs and its implementation process and mechanisms, 2) practical understanding about issues related to sustainable development, in particular inequality (Goal 10), peace and justice (Goal 16), and Official Development Assistance (ODA) and multi-stakeholder partnership (Goal 17); and 3) better strategies and action plans on SDG implementation at national and sub-national as well as international levels.PROGRAMME OUTLINE

and policy dialogue with the members of Global Council of the IFP on 24 Oct. 2017

About 20-30 participants are expected to attend the 5th session of the GALAA East Asia. The selection criteria of participants include:
- Full-time middle-level staff in a national, sub-regional in East Asia – Southeast or Northeast Asia, or regional NGO/CSO in Asia;
- Minimum 3 years experiences in the field of policy and advocacy on human rights, democracy or/and sustainable development;
- Commitment to working in the same organization at least until the end of 2018;
- Basic knowledge and experiences about SDGs
- Ability to communicate in English (both spoken and written).

Asia Civil Society Partnership for Sustainable Development (APSD is an open, inclusive and independent civil society platform of CSOs/NGO, social and grassroots movements in Asia, engaged in advocacy on issues related to sustainable development especially the implementation of UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
